Like all art, theatre is not simply a reflection of reality. Through its multifaceted relationship to our coexistence, it brings our reality to life. It is not for nothing that theatre is called ’the live arts’: It is alive, it calls into being, it gives life. Therein lies its challenge. In this book Milo Rau discusses how he, together with others, takes up this challenge. First through a programmatic text for engaged art, then in dialogue with critic Marijn Lems, and finally through the speeches of some NTGent makers. Rau (as artistic director) together with Lara Staal, Chokri Ben Chikha, Jesse Vandamme, and Miet Warlop imagine The (City) Theatre of the Future.
Milo Rau is director, author and artistic director of NTGent.
